Emergency Procedures

In the event an emergency occurs on campus, you may be asked to take certain protective actions. The most common protective actions requested will be:

In case of an emergency who should I contact?

Call 911 or Anna Maria College Department of Police Services at (508) 494-9010.

Take action

  • Call 911 or the Paxton Police Officer on Duty at Anna Maria College at (508) 494-9010 to activate Emergency Medical Services (EMS). You can also contact an officer through the Anna Maria BlueLight App.
  • Explain the type of emergency, the location of the victim, and the condition of the victim.
  • Let the officer know of any safety hazards – weapons, chemical spill, fire, fumes, etc.
  • Tell the officer if the person is unconscious, not breathing, is bleeding profusely, or has chest pain.
  • Do not hang up unless told to do so by the officer.
  • Reassure the victim that help is on the way.
  • Do not attempt to move the victim.
  • Do not give victim anything to eat or drink.
  • Stay calm.
  • Monitor the victim and assist the victim to your level of ability until help arrives.

What should I report?

Be sure to mention:

  • Emergency Type
  • Building
  • Room
  • Name

In the event an emergency occurs on campus, you may be asked to take certain protective actions. The primary method of communicating instructions during an emergency will be the College’s Emergency Notification system utilizing text messages, email and voice mail. A student may update contact information, notably a cell phone number by logging in to Online Services and selecting Personal Information under the Settings and Tools tab. The most common protective actions requested will be:

ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate)
Anna Maria College utilizes the ALICE Program as a tool to help improve our safety and security procedures, specifically in regard to active shooter and violent intruder response. ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training prepares individuals to handle the threat of an Active Shooter. ALICE teaches individuals to participate in their own survival while leading others to safety.

Though no one can guarantee success in this type of situation, this new set of skills will greatly increase the odds of survival should anyone face this form of disaster.

At the beginning of each semester, you will be notified of the schedule of on-campus training sessions open to all members of the College community.

In an emergency should I shelter in place or evacuate?

To Shelter-in-Place

  • Get/stay indoors.
  • Secure doors and windows; turn off any air conditioning units in room.
  • Stay indoors until notified that it’s safe to go outdoors.

For Building Evacuation

  • Evacuate building using nearest exit (or alternate exit if blocked).
  • Take personal belongings (backpacks, keys, purses, wallets, etc.).
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Secure hazardous materials or equipment.
  • Follow instructions by faculty, staff, or emergency personnel.
  • Move away from the building.

What to do in case of an Active Shooter?

Anna Maria College is committed to student and employee safety through the adoption of the A.L.I.C.E. program (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate), a nationally recognized approach. A.L.I.C.E. is a proactive set of responses to an active intruder situation that empowers individuals to consider various safety options. For more information about ALICE please visit https://www.alicetraining.com/our-program/alice-training/ .

A.L.I.C.E. is recommended by multiple national organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, F.E.M.A., and the F.B.I. These organizations encourage schools to have active plans involving decision-making and options beyond traditional lockdowns, should an emergency arise.

The A.L.I.C.E. model:

Alert
ALERT is when you first become aware of a threat. The sooner you understand that you’re in danger, the sooner you can save yourself. A speedy response is critical. Seconds count.

Alert is overcoming denial, recognizing the signs of danger and receiving notifications about the danger from others. Alerts should be accepted, taken seriously, and should help you make survival decisions based on your circumstances.

Lockdown
If EVACUATION is not a safe option, barricade entry points into your room in an effort to create a semi-secure starting point.

Our training explains scenarios where Lockdown may be the preferable option and dispels myths about passive, traditional ‘lockdown only’ procedures that create readily identifiable targets and makes a shooter’s mission easier. ALICE trainers instruct on practical techniques for how to better barricade a room, what to do with mobile and electronic devices, how and when to communicate with police, and how to use your time in lockdown to prepare to use other strategies (i.e. Counter or Evacuate) that might come into play should the active shooter gain entry.

Inform

The purpose of INFORM is to continue to communicate information in as real time as possible, if it is safe to do so. Armed intruder situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly, which means that ongoing, real-time information is key to making effective survival decisions. Information should always be clear, direct and in plain language, not using codes. If the shooter is known to be in an isolated section of a building, occupants in other wards can safely evacuate while those in direct danger can perform enhanced lockdown and prepare to counter.

Video surveillance, 911 calls and PA announcements are just a few of the channels that may be used by employees, safety officers, and other personnel to inform others. An emergency response plan should have clear methods outlined for informing school employees, hospital workers, or any other employees of the location of a violent intruder.

Counter
ALICE Training does not believe that actively confronting a violent intruder is the best method for ensuring the safety of those involved. Counter is a strategy of last resort. Counter focuses on actions that create noise, movement, distance and distraction with the intent of reducing the shooter’s ability to shoot accurately. Creating a dynamic environment decreases the shooter’s chance of hitting a target and can provide the precious seconds needed in order to evacuate.

Evacuate
ALICE provides techniques for safer and more strategic evacuations. Evacuating to a safe area takes people out of harm’s way and hopefully prevents civilians from having to come into any contact with the shooter.

Did you know that you should break a window from the top corner as opposed to the center? Many useful techniques that civilians do not know exist and can save your life. ALICE trainers teach strategies for evacuating through windows, from higher floors and under extreme duress.

What should I do in a fire?

  • Activate the nearest fire alarm.
  • Call Anna Maria Police Services and/or 911.
  • Evacuate the building.
  • Do not enter the building until authorized by emergency personnel.

What should I do in severe weather or tornado?

If Indoors

  • Seek shelter in lowest level of the building.
  • Stay away from exterior windows and doors.
  • If “drop and tuck” position is used: low squat, knees and chin to chest, facing wall with hands interlocked over head.
  • Do not go outside until threat has passed.

If Outdoors

  • Try to seek shelter indoors immediately.
  • If unable, get to a low area such as a ditch or ravine or depression works well.
  • Lie flat in ditch or low area.
  • Lie face down and cover your head and face.

High Rise Building

  • In a high-rise building, go to a small, interior room or hallway with no windows.

What should I do if I encounter hazardous materials?

  • In the case of an emergency or if anyone is in danger, call Anna Maria Police Services and/or 911.
  • Move away from the hazardous location to a safe location or evacuate the building.
  • Alert others to stay clear of the area.
  • Notify emergency personnel if you have been exposed or have information about the release.

What should I do in a power outage?

  • Secure any hazardous materials or operations.
  • Move cautiously to a lighted area. Exits may be indicated by lighted signs if emergency power is operating.
  • Consider switching off/unplugging sensitive equipment.
  • Evacuate the area.

What should I do if I see a suspicious object?

  • Do not touch or disturb the object.
  • Call Anna Maria Police Services and/or 911.
  • Notify Faculty, staff or supervisor.
  • Alert others to stay clear of the area.
  • Evacuate the area.

What should I do in the case of identity theft?

Identity theft is a growing concern for everyone. Click here for useful information on preventing identity theft.

Students should take steps to protect their personal information.

  • Shred all credit card offers (don’t just toss them in the trash).
  • Don’t give out personal information on the phone or computer unless you have initiated the contact (don’t fall for phishing on-line where you are asked for information in an email that looks legitimate but is not).
  • Protect passwords (don’t keep your pin number with your ATM card and don’t share passwords with others, not even your roommate).
  • Don’t use the same password for all of your sites and change your passwords often.
  • Limit the access others have to your personal data and items (using a lockbox for paperwork such as credit card receipts, bank statements, social security card, etc., and keep your credit cards, wallet, checkbook in a secure location, not out in plain view).

Daily Crime Log

Anna Maria College is required by 34 CFR 668.46(f) to create, maintain and make available a daily crime log. The purpose of the daily crime log is to record criminal incidents and alleged criminal incidents that are reported to the campus police department.

Crime log entries include all crimes reported to the campus police department, not just Clery Act crimes. A crime is entered into the log within 48 hours of being reported to the police department. This includes crimes that are reported directly to the Paxton Police department, as well as crimes that are initially reported to another campus security authority or to a local law enforcement agency who subsequently reports them to the Paxton Police department. In addition to recording reported crimes that occurred on campus, in or on non-campus buildings or property or on public property within the campus or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus, reports of crimes that occurred within the patrol jurisdiction of the campus security department are also entered into the crime log.

This log is open to public inspection, upon request, during normal business hours.

Daily Fire Log

Anna Maria College is required by 34 CFR 668.46(i) to create, maintain and make available a daily fire log. The purpose of the daily fire log is to record incidents of a fire that are reported to the campus security section.

Fire log entries include all fires reported to the Paxton Police. A fire is entered into the log within 48 hours of being reported to the Paxton Police department.

This log is open to public inspection, upon request, during normal business hours.

Emergency Notification

Anna Maria College subscribes to a mass notification system to help expedite communications with the campus community in the event of an emergency. All Anna Maria Community members should ensure their contact information is up to date.

The campus community will be notified if there is a change in campus status due to severe weather. The College will:

  • Issue an Alert via the Rave system, triggering a text message to all registered cellphone numbers and an email to the campus community.
  • Post information to the Anna Maria College Homepage
  • Post information to the Anna Maria College social media channels.
  • Inform local media outlets.
  • Strive to provide campus status by 6 a.m. on weather-affected weekdays.

Rave Guardian

Rave Guardian is a free mobile app that turns your smartphone into a personal safety device. By downloading Rave Guardian to a mobile phone, users can invite friends and family directly from their phone’s contact list to join their network as a “guardian.” Users can then request one or more of their guardians to act as a virtual safety escort when traveling on or off campus. It’s like being in the company of a trusted friend at all times. Should a user run into trouble during a trip, Rave Guardian includes one-button access to 911 or the Paxton Police Department.

Why does AMC have this app?

Safety is a top priority at Anna Maria. We believe the app is another valuable tool available to the campus community to enhance the safety and security of our faculty, staff and students.

Who should download Rave Guardian?

We strongly encourage all faculty, staff and students to take advantage of this safety tool. It’s free, easy to use and offers another layer of protection. Friends and family do not need a College email or to have the Rave Guardian app to be a “guardian.”

What should I include in my profile?

The more information you provide, the more designated responders will know how to assist you in an emergency. At minimum, include your address (home and school), your physical description and a recent photo. If necessary, include any important medical information.

Does it matter what email address I use?

Yes. If you want to take advantage of the campus-specific features, you should use your Anna Maria College email address when creating a profile on the app. By doing so, you will be able to access the tips feature and contact Paxton Police at the touch of a button and more.

How does the “safety timer” work?

Once you’ve downloaded Rave Guardian to your mobile phone, you can invite friends and family to join your network as “guardians,” even if they don’t have the Rave Guardian app installed on their phone. You can invite guardians to virtually join you during a timed session, such as a walk home late at night or a trip to a new area. Remember, Anna Maria College Police does not monitor the timed sessions, only your guardian(s) can follow your route. Here’s how it works:

  • Select anyone from your phone’s contact list to be your guardian(s) to join you virtually during a timed trip.
  • Add a note explaining to your guardian(s) where you’re going.
  • Set the timer for how long you think your trip will take.
  • Hit “Start Timer” button, and Rave Guardian will automatically invite your selected guardian(s) and start counting down the trip.
  • During the timed trip, Rave Guardian will share your approximate location and route with your appointed guardian(s). Remember, ONLY the guardian(s) you choose for the trip can see this data.
  • If you discover the time for the trip has changed, use the “Add 1 Minute” or “Subtract 1 Minute” buttons to adjust your time.
  • Deactivate the timer when you arrive safely at your destination. If you don’t deactivate the timer, Rave Guardian automatically messages your guardian(s) when it expires.

Is Rave Guardian always tracking me?

No. You can only be located if you have asked for help. Rave Guardian location information is only enabled when you choose to make an emergency call, send a tip or when your safety timer expires, alerting your guardian(s) to your location.

You share your location on your terms, either sharing your location once or with streaming capabilities.

Will Rave Guardian let other people like my family or friends track me?

Yes. If you assign “guardians” during an individual “timed” usage, they will be able to track your status in real time. But remember, you are in full control of this feature.

Can my guardian be someone who is not on campus?

Anyone in your smartphone’s contact list can be your guardian. Guardians do not need an Anna Maria email address or have the Rave Guardian app downloaded on their phone

Does Rave Guardian transmit Anna Maria Alert text messages?

Yes. Examples include weather-related emergencies and serious criminal activity on campus.

Does Rave Guardian work off campus?

Yes, Rave Guardian will work off campus, but if you have an emergency at an off-campus location, you should always dial 911.
